It’s indeed an interesting visualisation. Simple, no clutter, good use of colours and the clustering seems to work just fine.

Compared to the heatmaps I’ve seen so far, which are basically trying to do the same thing (see e.g. http://www.heatmapapi.com/) it is much cleaner and adds information without adding complexity: the number of items a dot represents is valuable to the user.
